La Grange des Combes has great flexibility. It works well sipping on its own, or a great choice for a food pairing wine at meals

La Grange des Combes by Cave de Roquebrun is a French wine from Languedoc, France, which is located in the South of France between the Spanish border and Bordeaux. This is a blended red wine made with Syrah (Shiraz) grapes (~50%), along with Grenache Noir (~30%) and Mourvèdre (~20%) varieties. If you enjoy Syrah wines, read on for my plain language wine review.

La Grange des Combes 2020 Overview

La Grange des Combes 2020 is a dry red wine that is full bodied with a rich, dark red color to match. It is not fully opaque. La Grange des Combes is aged in stainless steel vats, so no barrel-induced woody or smoky aromas or flavors are present. Alcohol content (ABV) is 14%.

La Grange des Combes 2020 Aroma

After a swirl in the glass, La Grange des Combes offers a light to medium aroma that is slightly earthy in nature—like a walk in the woods after a rain. To be honest, the aroma intensity is fairly light. That's not a bad thing; it's just requires a stretch of imagination when trying to detect anything specific to note there. I get a slight hint of some type of darker berry (like a blackberry), but that's about it.

All in all, La Grange des Combes has a pleasant wine aroma that's unlikely to offend anyone.

La Grange des Combes 2020 On First Sip

On first sip, the flavor is medium to strong and generally quite nice — much more flavorful than the aroma may have indicated.

The full-bodied flavor of this wine is pleasant and complex. The berry fruitiness comes through, but it is not too strong or dominant at all.

I would not call this a fruity wine.

There is a light spice complexity and a balanced earthiness with a slight hint of something like black licorice or perhaps mocha (but not at all dominant). The tannins are light to medium and overall it is a very well balanced wine.

The finish is medium to long and it lingers with no sour or offensive aftertaste of any kind. A very nice wine to enjoy.

Winery Tasting Notes

For the sommeliers out there, Cave de Roquebrun notes the following:

"Very beautiful intense red color. The nose is rich, powerful and has notes of candied cherries and undergrowth. The palate is harmonious with a delicate, slightly mineral finish. It will be perfect with a guinea fowl with morels as well as cheeses."

Final Thoughts

La Grange des Combes is an evenly balanced red wine that will appeal to a wide range of wine drinkers.

If you like Syrah/Shiraz wines, it is definitely worth trying.

If you like red wines generally, La Grange des Combes fits in the middle of pack in terms of flavor intensity versus lighter reds on one end of the spectrum and something like a Cabernet Franc on the other. So La Grange des Combes has great flexibility. It works well sipping on its own, or as a great choice for a food pairing wine at meals (including everything from grilled meats and burgers, to veggie dishes and roasted meats).

Cave de Roquebrun is located in Roquebrun, France.
