Simi Chardonnay 2020: Wine Review
A slightly earthy Chardonnay with a touch of spicy flavor
Simi Chardonnay 2020 is a California Chardonnay blend (95% Chardonnay, plus 5% other white grape varieties) from the Simi winery in Sonoma.
Simi Chardonnay Overview
Simi Chardonnay is a slightly dry white wine coming in at 13.5% ABV. It is elegant and refined with a well-balanced flavor profile. It has a nice light yellow-gold coloring. This wine is generally well received across many of its recent vintages.
Simi Chardonnay Aroma
Before taking the first sip, I gave Simi Chardonnay a swirl in the glass to see what aromas I could detect. The aroma is medium intensity and refreshingly bright and inviting. It is fruity, with a bit of pear and some citrus. When I tried to go further with the aromas, I got some Granny Smith apple as well.
Simi Chardonnay on First Sip
On first sip, Simi Chardonnay does not match the brightness of its aroma. It is a muted taste compared to the aroma, and it is moderately acidic. I would describe it as slightly earthy and definitely a little spicy or zesty (not too spicy, but it's there if you like that). It is light-medium bodied with a short-medium finish (which lingers brighter than the taste, closer to the aroma). The alcohol flavor is present, but in good balance.
Overall, Simi Chardonnay 2020 is a lightly “creamy” textured wine (as far as wines go when it comes to being creamy). Sort of a silky feel that is pleasant to consume. It is well rounded and everything works in balance.
Simi Winery Tasting Notes
For the sommeliers out there, Simi Winery notes:
"This wine features flavors of apple, pear, and stone fruits with hints of citrus and tropical notes. Toasted sweet oak, vanilla cream, and baking spice complement a rich, round mouthfeel with balanced acidity and a touch of minerality on the finish."
Final Thoughts
Simi Chardonnay 2020 will appeal to wine drinkers who enjoy a more earthy and substantial white wine (compared to something generally much lighter, like a Pinot Grigio for example). While Simi Chardonnay 2020 has a bright and fruity aroma, its taste is a more muted version of this (which is typical of chardonnay grapes).
Simi Chardonnay is a good pick if you enjoy Chardonnay wines.
Simi Winery is located in Sonoma County, California.
