Cave Spring Riesling Estate 2020 Aroma

Before taking a first sip, I gave this Cave Spring Riesling Estate a swirl in the glass to release the aromas for a first impression.

Right off the bat, the aroma is medium intensity, light, fruity and has a slight citrus note. While the aroma is light and citrusy, it also leans a little earthy as opposed to being overly bright. I got a hint of stone fruit in there as well, along the lines of a plum. So it’s not all citrus by any means.

All in all it is a pleasant and multi-layered first experience with the wine.

Cave Spring Riesling Estate 2020 On First Sip

On first sip, Cave Spring Riesling Estate 2020 is medium-bodied with a medium flavor intensity. It leans dry, but is definitely crisp with a pleasantly complex flavor profile.

There is a lot more going on here beyond what I expected from the initial aroma.

Specific flavors included grapefruit, orange peel and a hint of tropical fruit as well. The finish is very enjoyable and has a slight hint of something along the lines of ginger spice rounding out the finish. Not too spicy, but perfectly balanced and satisfying. Sweetness is just right at 6.0 g/L (if you're keeping score), just a step beyond what I would consider a dry wine.

Cave Spring Winery Tasting Notes

For the sommeliers out there, Cave Spring notes the following about this wine:

2020 was a warm, dry vintage with low-to-moderate yields and highly concentrated fruit. Riesling ripened somewhat early, delivering fully extracted wines with ample acidity and long-term cellaring potential.

Final Thoughts: Cave Spring Riesling Estate 2020

I really enjoyed this wine. If you like a good Riesling, this VQA Niagara wine is well worth trying. It offers up a bouquet of fruit flavors across a very complex spectrum that all combine to produce a very interesting wine tasting experience.

Cave Spring Riesling Estate 2020 is indeed a pleasantly crisp wine with a bit of a bite and a solid medium finish. It is very satisfying in that regard.

Enjoy it for all these qualities, or as a great pairing wine with your favorite seafood, pork dish or cheese.

Cave Spring Vineyard is located in Beamsville, Ontario.
