How to Make a Shave Ice Mojito
The perfect frozen mojito recipe you can make at home
Looking for something fresh and frozen to serve your guests this summer?
During the summer months, I serve Hawaiian Shave Ice to our backyard guest from our poolside bar On The Rocks (the outdoor sister bar to the Grand One Lounge). While any shave ice is perfect on a hot sunny day, a frozen Mojito shave ice is a perfect concoction that you can make for both adult guests and as a no-alcohol version (just skip the rum for the alcohol-free version).
While an ice shaver is ideal for authentic style Hawaiian Shave Ice, you can use a powerful blender or any other method you may have to get the ice as fluffy and snowy as possible.
Here's how to make a Shave Ice Mojito at Home.
Mojito Shave Ice Ingredients
Torani Mojito Mint Syrup
Rose's Lime Cordial
Bacardi Mojito Rum (or plain rum will do)
Sweetened Condensed Milk
Fresh Mint Leaves
Fresh Lime Wedge
How to Make a Hawaiian Shave Ice Mojito
Have your ingredients ready to go so you can create your shave ice Mojito before the ice begins to melt. It's best to keep your bottled ingredients chilled so that they don't melt the ice as quickly when you pour them on.
After you crush the ice and place it into your bowl or serving container (I use the equivalent of approximately eight ice cubes for each serving), begin by drizzling the Torani Mint Syrup back and forth across the top of the ice (approximately 1/2 oz to 3/4 oz depending on how strong you want the flavors. I like to go a little bold for shave ice.
Next, drizzle the Rose's Lime Cordial in the same way across the top, moving in the opposite direction (think if a grill marks pattern).
Then, drizzle the rum equally across the top. If you’re using Bacardi Mojito Rum, you can drizzle a little more than an ounce if you prefer, as it is much lower alcohol than straight rum. Either way, I recommend doing a taste test before you serve your first Mojito shave ice to guests.
Finally, as a finishing touch, drizzle the sweetened condensed milk across the top of the shave ice in a criss-cross pattern. In Hawaii they call this snow on the mountain. It's optional on any shave ice, but it adds a nice touch and I’ve rarely had a guest who didn’t want this sweet topper.
Finally, garnish your shave ice with a sprig of fresh mint (slap it to release the mint oil aroma) and a fresh lime wedge. Serve with a straw and spoon and enjoy.
Hawaiian Shave Ice is a great way to make a frozen Mojito that’s a little different than a typical version over ice. Have fun experimenting!
