Not every tropical rum cocktail is super sweet or made in a blender

Looking for a tropical drink that isn't overly sweet or fruity? The Beachcomber is a rum cocktail that will appeal to anyone who wants to enjoy a refreshing rum drink that isn't frozen or loaded with sugar.

I have seen a few versions of the Beachcomber that date back to the 1940s or 1950s. In some versions, the grenadine is replaced with Luxardo cherry liqueur. In other versions this is a blended drink. Those may be options to try, but I highly recommend this version that spares the extra alcohol and adds the pomegranate flavor profile of grenadine.

Beachcomber Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 oz light rum

  • 1/2 oz Triple Sec

  • 1/2 oz lemon juice (fresh squeezed)

  • 1/2 oz grenadine

Shake the ingredients with ice and strain into a martini glass. rimmed with fine sugar (sugar rim optional). Garnish with a lemon wheel.

Beachcomber Variations

Another option for this (which I do not do) is to rim the martini glass with fine sugar, or confectioner’s sugar. I am not fond of rimming cocktail glasses, with the exception of certain drinks where it is a key part of the flavor profile (such as a Caesar). However, it is an option to add the sugar rim to the Beachcomber.
